About the Role

Operating under limited direction, this roleplays a key role ensuring the Department of Transport delivers critical road projects. The role leads various activities to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and achieve strict quality and safety standards. Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Leader is responsible for providing expertise for project planning, design, procurement, contract development and execution of works, surveillance; complex stakeholder engagement; coupled with effective financial management.

The Project Leader contributes to developing and delivering project activities, supporting the strategic direction of the Department and building effective stakeholder relationships. To succeed, the incumbent must drive collaborative relationships with municipalities, utility agencies, contractors and other Victorian State Government Departments.

The role is required to work closely with project teams to monitor progress and ensure successful delivery against the four elements of successful project management: cost, time, quality and stakeholder management. The Senior Project Engineer will successfully ensure compliance with legislative requirements, apply expert contract management capabilities and apply professional expertise.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

  • Effective Delivery of Projects - Has effectively delivered projects ensuring that budget, schedule, environmental, safety and quality outcomes are achieved.
  • Stakeholder Management and Community Engagement - The incumbent has actively engaged with key stakeholders and the community.
  • Supplier Engagement - With support of Commercial Team engages suppliers to ensure the timely completion of commercial and project deliverables.
  • Quality and Risk Management - The incumbent ensures that projects meet and are delivered in accordance with project management, financial, risk, quality, safety procedures and policy and complies with regulations.
  • Promote and support safe, inclusive and flexible team operations

Key Selection Criteria

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will effectively define, coordinate, and monitor project tasks to ensure successful delivery while taking corrective action when necessary. They will proactively manage stakeholder relationships by addressing concerns, adding value, and ensuring satisfaction, while also maintaining a strong commercial awareness to optimize operations and vendor engagements. Additionally, they will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills by tailoring communication to different audiences, understanding stakeholder needs, and aligning daily planning with broader strategic objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

  • Experience at managing infrastructure projects

Desirable

  • A relevant tertiary degree in engineering, project management or at significant and equivalent experience.
