About the Business Unit
Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place provides Aboriginal men, on a Community Correction Order, with an important opportunity to learn new skills, reconnect with, or further strengthen, their culture and participate in programs and activities to help them address their offending behaviour.
Wulgunggo Ngalu, in the Gunai Kurnai language, means ‘which way together' and was officially opened in September 2008. Participation in the program is voluntary and involves living at Wulgunggo Ngalu, in Gippsland, for between three to six months.
It is a state-wide, culturally appropriate residential diversion program for up to 18 Aboriginal adult males at any one time who have been sentenced by the court to a Community Correction Order. It provides an environment that is relevant and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal men. Wulgunggo Ngalu Learning Place is a key initiative of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement, a partnership agreement between the Victorian State Government and the Aboriginal community established in response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
Corrections Victoria is committed to reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system, and to providing services that are culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal offenders.
Some of your duties will include:
• Screen suitability of incoming referrals and contribute to detailed assessments of candidates' suitability:
o Liaise with Community Corrections Officers, family and significant others from the candidate's community
o Coordinate and participate in candidate interviews as part of the assessment process
• Apply evidence-based practice in the case management of offenders assessed as medium or high risk of reoffending including ensuring effective assessment, planning, intervention and review.
• Identify and evaluate factors that relate to individual offending behaviour and provide individualised risk assessment, case planning, service coordination, identification of interventions to reduce risk, and use of brokerage funds where required to ensure engagement of offender's responsive interventions

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
Demonstrated understanding and/or practice of modelling pro social behaviours and ability to motivate and influence individuals who are being case managed.
