About Us
Apunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health service, which provides culturally appropriate, family centred, primary health care services to the communities and people of Cape York.
About the role
The Aboriginal Disability Liaison Officer role it to raise awareness of the National Disability Insurance Scheme within Cape York and test eligibility to improve access and assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability and their families to navigate the NDIS process. This position is full time and fixed term ending on Friday 6 June 2025.
This position is identified where, under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Essential:
- A minimum 3 years’ experience working with disability and mental health clients.
- Experience in care coordination, preferably in a rural or remote health setting.
- High level experience assisting clients in a remote community setting.
- Experience navigating NDIS systems and processes.
- Practical working knowledge and overview of Cape York communities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong time management skills.
- Demonstrated organisational and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and drive to meet unexpected challenges.
- Ability to undertake successful interventions with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, including client education, and individual assessment.
- Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York.
- Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs.
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community control.
- Be approachable, positive, and respectful.
- Informed understanding and knowledge of the impact of disability on daily life and how reasonable and necessary supports can impact on a person's ability to participate in community and economic life.
- Ability to facilitate professional introduction and establish relationships between participants, their families and others, as relevant stakeholders, service providers and pathway supports whether formal or informal, funded or not funded.
- High level computer literacy and familiarity with/ability to readily attain familiarity with database maintenance
- Ability to understand and comply with legislation and manage potential conflicts of interest and seek assistance to do so, if required.
- Must be willing and have the ability to travel in Cape York either by light aircraft or 4WD as required.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Diploma in Disability, or Community Services
- Disability Screening Card
- Australian Federal Police Check, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement
- Current Queensland Drivers Licence
- Current Blue Card positive notice or exemption, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement
