The Role

This is a civilian (non-uniformed) role, as part of the Australian Public Service (APS) workforce within Navy.

Our psychologists have a diverse organisational and operational psychology role, in support of Navy members on Navy Establishments. We work as part of a broader psychology team of professionals, including psychology assistants and work closely with other health professionals and command teams.

In this role you will be a part of the Navy Psychology East section, providing psychological support to Navy members and contributing directly to Navy’s capability and national security.

The services delivered by an APS 6 Psychologist include referrals from Command for advice, referrals from Navy members for work-related support, mental health training delivery, operational mental health screening, critical incident mental health support and organisational interventions.

About our Team

The Navy Psychology East section is located at HMAS Kuttabul (Potts Point) on the beautiful Sydney Harbour close to the CBD and Royal Botanic Garden.

Our team consists of a Senior Psychologist, two APS 6 Psychologists, uniformed Navy Psychologists, and a Psychology Assistant. The team works together to achieve a high standard of psychology service provision, liaising regularly with command elements, health providers and other wellbeing stakeholders.

The section provides the full scope of Navy Psychology Services to Navy Fleet Units and the Garrison Shore Establishments in the Sydney area.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is seeking variety in their professional career, able to work with reasonable autonomy, has a willingness to learn, and who is passionate about supporting Navy personnel to perform at their best in order to successfully fulfil Navy’s Mission.

They will be capable of performing a range of psychology services including psychological assessments, training delivery and development, report writing, brief psychological intervention, critical incident management mental health support, and stakeholder engagement.

They will be drawn to working in the operational, occupational and clinical space, be able to adapt to a changing environment to match operational tempo, and be able to provide advice on complex and sensitive issues taking into account conflicting needs.

Finally, they must be able to build and sustain effective working relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 16 March 2025.
