Bringing Them Home Worker

Full-time, 38 hours a week

About the Role

The role of the Bringing Them Home Worker is crucial in supporting individuals and families affected by the historical trauma caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. This worker helps with the healing process and provides a range of services to address the unique needs of those impacted by these policies. This position focuses on providing culturally sensitive support, facilitating family reunions, and promoting healing within the community.

About You

To excel in this position, you should possess the following qualifications and qualities:

• You are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• Diploma or Certificate in Community Services, Mental Health, or Family Support.
• A degree focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and issues is highly desirable.
• In-depth knowledge of the history and impact of the Stolen Generations, including policies of forced child removal, assimilation practices, and their long-term effects on individuals and communities.
• Awareness of the historical trauma that has been passed down through generations and how it manifests in current social, emotional, and cultural challenges.
• Ability to provide basic counselling and emotional support, particularly using trauma-informed techniques that prioritise the client’s dignity and autonomy.
• The ability to understand and respond to the emotional needs of clients with compassion and sensitivity.
