The successful candidate will perform general laboratory duties including the receipt of specimens and the registration of requests into the laboratory information system.

Your key responsibilities

You will be required to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service values.

  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • Preparation of specimens for local testing, and the packaging and dispatches of samples to referral laboratories.
  • Maintenance of a safe working environment by the cleaning of work benches, equipment and work sinks within the laboratory.
  • Comply with procedural standards for operational staff working in the specimen reception and processing areas of the laboratory in compliance with National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) 15089 and Queensland Health Information Standards Officer (ISO) 9001:2000.
  • Performance of other non-technical tasks e.g. Participate in Document Control in Quality Information System (QIS), equipment maintenance, stock inventory control.
  • Participate in continuing education program for the Central Specimen Reception.
  • Effectively prioritise workloads to assist the laboratory in meeting Pathology Queensland turnaround time targets

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • A working knowledge of or demonstrated ability to quickly learn all aspects of pre-analytical specimen processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal local supervision.
  • Demonstrated data entry skills and in the use of Microsoft Office applications, i.e. Word and Excel.
  • Ability to effectively use or quickly acquire the ability to use the laboratory information system (Auslab).
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills to enable effective interaction within a work group and between clients.
  • Work in a manner displaying integrity; complying with ethical and behavioural standards, respecting patient confidentiality and the importance of patient results.
