The Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporate (MAP Co) is the State Government agency responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Melbourne Arts Precinct (MAPT) project as well as the operations, programming, promotion and maintenance of Fed Square.
MAP Co is overseeing the delivery of the $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation project that includes, The Fox: NGV Contemporary, a new gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design; Laak Boorndap, the 18,000 square metre public open space in the heart of the precinct; as well as significant upgrades to Arts Centre Melbourne and its historic State Theatre.
It also takes on the management and operations of Fed Square and is responsible for connecting a single continuous art, civic, and cultural precinct stretching from Fed Square through Southbank.
Once the transformation is complete, MAP Co will also manage and activate Laak Boorndap, the urban garden that will connect the Melbourne Arts Precinct in a seamless and immersive cultural experience.
Fed Square is the gateway to the art precinct - and as Melbourne's public square it is the civic, cultural and community heart of the city. It home to three of Victoria's major cultural institutions: ACMI - Australia's Museum of Screen Culture, the Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT) and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia along with an array of restaurants and cafes. Located opposite the iconic Flinders St Station, it is Melbourne's premier meeting place, tourist destination and event venue for thousands of free events every year.

About the role
The Sustainability Manager at MAP Co will lead the development, implementation and reporting of innovative sustainability initiatives to enhance the precinct's environmental performance and community impact. This role will focus on reducing the site's carbon footprint, managing waste responsibly, promoting biodiversity, and fostering sustainable practices across operations, events, and tenant partnerships.
The Sustainability Manager will also engage with internal and external stakeholders to align initiatives with UN Sustainable Development Goals, report on key sustainability metrics, and drive programs that inspire environmental stewardship among visitors and staff. With a strong commitment to sustainability, this role will ensure MAP Co remains a leader in environmental excellence and resilience.
The Sustainability Manager has the following responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage the key service contracts with impacts on sustainability including the waste, cleaning, and utilities contracts.
- Collaborate with the Precinct Operations team on capital projects for environmental infrastructure improvements, energy and water efficiency initiatives and building upgrades.
- Develop and implement a Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan with the United Nations Development Goals as the core focus.
- Work with internal stakeholders to incorporate sustainability practices into asset management, building repairs, preventative and reactive maintenance to ensure long-term efficiency and environmental performance.
- Track key sustainability metrics and key performance indicators in building service contracts with regards to energy use, waste reduction, carbon emissions, and water consumption, and prepare regular reports for stakeholders.
- Develop strategies to achieve and maintain carbon neutrality, including energy efficiency projects and renewable energy adoption.
- Collaborate with external stakeholders including contractors, tenants, event clients, suppliers, and the community to drive collective sustainability initiatives and partnerships.
- Support and advise internal stakeholders particularly on sustainable event planning and execution, including waste management, energy use, and sustainable material sourcing.
- Work to protect and enhance biodiversity onsite, including the implementation of new ideas for the management of gardens, rooftop bees, and other natural spaces.
- Research and implement cutting-edge technologies and social responsibility practices to position MAP Co as a leader in environmental sustainability.
- Seek grants and work closely with the sponsorships stream on other funding opportunities to support sustainability initiatives and projects.
- Maintain up-to-date information on local, state, and federal environmental regulations and ensure all operations meet or exceed compliance requirements including work, health and safety considerations.
- Provide regular updates in papers to the Executive and Board on sustainability initiatives, achievements, challenges, and future plans.
- Act as MAP Co's representative in venue industry-specific sustainability forums, working groups, and committees to share insights, collaborate on best practices.
- Adherence to procurement processes, which includes preparing the tender, scope.
- Financial management including the development of OPEX budgets and processing invoices/purchase orders.
Key Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated experience in corporate sustainability strategy and principles, with an ability to quickly understand and advise on emerging trends and regulations.
- Competence in developing, executing, and overseeing contracts for facility services in a venue/precinct setting, e.g. waste management
- Proven experience in operational environmental sustainability practices and strategic initiatives such as decarbonisation, renewable energy, energy management and efficiency, waste management, sustainable procurement, circular economy and/or climate change adaptation and mitigation
- Demonstrated experience in environmental data management, analysis and reporting including carbon accounting
- Experience in project management and/or experience in coordinating or implementing facility upgrades to improve sustainability practices, forward planning, policy development and implementation expertise
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and collaboration including effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders including tenants, contractors and suppliers and positively influence a culture of sustainability
