As Senior Ranger, you will supervise, mentor and support staff based at the operational bases of Townsville and Whitsunday QPWS&P terrestrial bases in the delivery of work programs and projects in accordance with the regional business plan and annual budget allocations.

The role requires the ability to travel relatively frequently to work with both bases on project delivery. The regional priority is the delivery of the fire program. Due to both bases being responsible for land that neighbours built up areas, fire management and overseeing the fire program is a key focus for this role, particularly in Townsville. Outdoor recreation is also a key activity within the parks in this management unit and experience and willingness to work within community groups, sporting groups and commercial operations is critical.

Senior Rangers play a key role in managing the flow of information between on-ground operational rangers and management. This position remotely supervises staff living in a variety of rural and urban locations and deals with issues across the breadth of the department's business. Having the ability to establish and maintain effective and meaningful relationships and communicate with influence is essential.

As Senior Ranger, you will manage multiple responsibilities at one time - so organisational skills are a must. You will monitor the progress of the annual work program, manage resources to ensure key deliverables are met and find solutions when problems arise. At the same time, you will need to ensure your teams' work environments are safe and harmonious. This requires an ability to think on your feet and be adaptable while also being supportive and understanding.

Faced with varying and complex issues, you will need a solid understanding of policies and systems and will need to implement governance structures to support the delivery of the department's priorities.

As a Senior Ranger, you must be able to:
• Effectively lead and manage a geographically dispersed team
• Deliver and report on annual work programs and budgets
• Plan, develop and oversee the timely delivery of projects within budget and scope
• Participate in agency planning, monitoring and evaluation processes
• Prepare complex correspondence including ministerial documents and briefings
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes diversity and inclusion
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with park neighbours and First Nations peoples
• Provide information, advice and education to the public, industry and other key stakeholders
• Plan and manage emergency response, and support the recovery of areas after natural disaster events

Professional Capabilities
No mandatory qualifications are required to undertake this position, however a certificate in Conservation and Land Management or a related discipline will be highly regarded.

Licences
It is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold a current unrestricted manual driver's licence or be prepared to obtain a manual licence if they do not. Officers are required to drive government vehicles, including four wheel drives as a part of their day-to-day and field work.

Accommodation is provided for this temporary role in departmental housing at Cape Pallarenda.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
