The opportunity
ASIO is seeking a Technical Specialist Operational Communications with a focus on Communications Engineering. As a key member of our team of technical specialists, you'll play a crucial role in designing, developing, and supporting the ICT systems and infrastructure that underpin ASIO's critical mission.
As a Technical Specialist, you will assist with the provision of secure operational communications systems and capabilities, to support a diverse range of essential ASIO operational activities.
A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.
Role responsibilities
As Technical Specialist, Operational Communications you will:
- Lead a team of IT professionals, fostering a supportive and professional environment, and provide technical guidance and mentorship.
- Design and implement ICT architecture solutions that meet business needs, incorporating on-premises, cloud, virtualised environments, mobile telecommunications and Networked Radio Frequency systems.
- Provide system design, administration, and support expertise for enterprise application technologies, including Windows, Linux, and cloud-based platforms.
- Deliver high-quality IT services, meet deadlines, and achieve agreed outcomes.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies, adapting to new requirements, and driving innovation in the IT team.
- Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences, and provide regular reporting to management.
What you will bring
We invite applications from people with the following attributes:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in information technology, computer science or related disciplines or 5 or more years on the job experience in the aforementioned disciplines.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience in leading technical teams and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Technical expertise in ICT architecture design, with a focus on hybrid IT solutions and cloud-enabled technologies.
- Broad experience in designing, implementing, and supporting complex systems, including Windows, Linux, cloud-based platforms, mobile telecommunications and networked Radio Frequency systems.
- A proven track record of delivering high-quality results, meeting deadlines, and achieving agreed outcomes.
- A strong ability to learn and adapt, with a focus on emerging technologies and innovative solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Industry certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP/CCIE or equivalent are advantageous.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a collaborative and supportive mindset.

Location
These positions are located in Canberra. Applicants would be required to relocate to this location if successful. Relocation assistance is provided to successful applicants where required.

Employment conditions
Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
