Are you a Commercial Lawyer that has a passion for complex projects and wants to shape the future of Australia’s defence and national security landscape?

If so, join us.

About us

Aldermane is an award-winning NewLaw firm that seeks to ensure the safety of Australia through the delivery of cutting-edge Defence projects and major Government programs. We work directly with our clients to resolve major contracting, strategic, and security issues, so that the Australian Defence Force remains operational and ready to protect people just like you.

We are a young and vibrant team of lawyers, consultants, and project advisory specialists who want to deliver our services differently. By adopting a flexible legal and service delivery model, we can adapt to our clients’ needs and service them in an agile way, without the constraints of operating in a traditional firm environment.

We were recently named the Government Team of the Year at the 2023 Australian Law Awards, and are seeking to grow in our core Defence and security practice areas.

About you

You will be a people-first person who brings a common-sense mindset to your work and adopts an approachable style in your professional interactions. You will be self-motivated and keen to learn from top-tier lawyers who are the best at what they do.

In terms of experience, you will have experience in Government procurement or projects, contract law, procurement, or commercial arrangements in a boutique or large legal or consulting firm, or Government department. Ideally, this will be gained in a Defence or related national security context (e.g., with exposure to the ASDEFCON suite of contracts or related Commonwealth procurement suites).

You will either be an existing Senior Associate or Special Counsel, or an exceptional Associate who is ready to take the leap in their career.

Relevant experience could include commercial and contracts law, probity, evaluations, approach-to-market development and tendering, negotiations, and procurement and contract management – although we are keen to hear from those with a diverse background in equivalent areas.

Mandatory requirement – please read

Given the nature of our work, an AGSVA-issued security clearance is essential. Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold an active NV1 clearance at minimum. Baseline clearances may be considered for exceptional candidates.

Applicants that do not meet this requirement will not be considered.

The role

During your time with us, you will advise on a range of procurement, commercial law, and contracting issues including:

  • Procurement options, policy, and planning,
  • Commercial strategy,
  • Tender and scope development, including integration and sustainment management,
  • Contract drafting, including on issues such as intellectual property, pricing models, liability frameworks, performance management and KPIs,
  • Collaborative contracting models involving industry and key stakeholders,
  • Tender evaluations,
  • Negotiation strategy setting and delivery, and
  • Contract delivery and management.

As a member of our team, you will also take a leading role in the day-to-day management and administration of a team of junior personnel and in directly contributing to client relationships and outcomes, and delivering on our firm-wide growth strategy.

Remuneration and benefits

By joining our team, you will be rewarded with the following benefits:

  • market-leading remuneration – we align our remuneration with top-tier firms, and have generous bonus and incentive schemes for committed and business-minded team members,
  • genuine learning and development – we have a learning and development program to enable you to learn from our people and reach your full potential,
  • flexible working – we focus on delivering our services in a way that promotes mental health and wellbeing,
  • mentoring – you will have a dedicated mentor through our ‘buddy’ system, to support you in your career, and
  • culture and community – opportunities to be involved in initiatives which align with our core values of honesty, community, and helping others.
