About the role

Working as part of a large on-roads operations unit, our Safety and Compliance Officers are at the frontline in keeping our roads safe by monitoring heavy vehicles, working with industry and applying the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

Your role will include:

  • Providing advice, education and guidance in the awareness of road safety for heavy vehicles in the community.
  • Undertaking compliance and enforcement activities including conducting heavy vehicle inspections, and checking the compliance of heavy vehicles, drivers and operators in line with the requirements of the HVNL.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure we deliver activities in accordance with relevant road transport laws, regulations and process.

In NSW, our Safety and Compliance officers are located across the state.

Within the West sector, you will primarily engage in Heavy Vehicle Safety Scheme (HVSS) activities, and occasionally in Heavy Vehicle Inspection Station (HVIS) and On Road Enforcement (ORE) tasks. Flexibility with working hours is required, as HVSS shifts can operate around the clock (24 hours). Travel may be required on occasion, including week-long stays. Availability for weekend work is also essential.

Upon commencement, you will start a comprehensive, six month training program that involves practical, online and on the job training. Candidates can expect to travel to Brisbane for the first 2 weeks of training. Over the course of the program, you may travel on occasion to attend training, being away from home for up to a week at a time.

About you

As a Safety and Compliance Officer you will have:

  • Automotive mechanical trade qualification – Light Vehicle or heavier
  • Motor vehicle open driver licence
  • Flexibility to work varying shift times and weekends, and undertake travel
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering a high standard of customer service
  • Excellent interpersonal skills where you can foster effective working relationships
  • Great written communication and record maintenance skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for road safety
  • Established computer skills – including experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • High level of ethics and a pragmatic approach; familiar with exercising professional judgement and can provide effective conflict management
  • Growth mindset and team player attitude
  • Experience in working with a range of policies and procedures
