About the organisation
Pika Wiya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is an exciting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service which offers comprehensive primary health, social support and training services to Aboriginal people in Port Augusta, with clinics located at Dartmouth Street in Port Augusta, Davenport, Copley and Nepabunna communities and provides services to other areas within our catchment area. Our health service provides a culturally appropriate preventative and curative health service to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Purpose of the role
The Mental Health Registered Nurse reports to and is supervised by the Mental Health Team Leader.
The successful applicant will:
- Apply clinical experience (generalist and/or specialist) clinical knowledge and professional competence to plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive and integrated range of services, appropriate to the needs of the consumers that align with the strategic direction of the Corporation.
- As part of an integrated diverse Mental health team, utilise a combination of preventative, early intervention, therapeutic or intervention approaches to consumers.
- Foster and maintain a holistic integrated primary health model of care linked to and inclusive of other programs and services.
Key accountabilities
- Provide clinical nursing experience to contribute towards improvement of high quality, safe mental health services and provides clinical and consultancy services that supports the recovery of mental health consumers across this community.
- Provide expert mental health nursing care.
- Provide clinical support to other members of the Mental Health Team.
- Coordinate projects, plans and initiatives that enhance clinical expertise and improve consumer/service outcomes.
- Develop an understanding of and demonstrate an effective and efficient method of communication with Aboriginal people from differing cultural backgrounds.
- Be aware of, and abide by, the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety Act.
- Work in accordance with the Mental Health Act (SA) of 2010.
Essential minimum requirements
Education
- Registered as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, with a current practicing certificate.
- Holds a Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
Personal Skills/Abilities
- Effective leadership skills including highly developed skills in communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Skills in using computer and software relevant to the area of practice.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and meet set timelines.
- Proven ability for flexibility, innovation, and creativity within the whole service setting.
- Demonstrated ability in leading and promoting consumer engagement initiatives.
- Ability to engage with Aboriginal community/consumers in a culturally appropriate manner and a willingness to undertake further training in this manner.
- Ability to analyse complex clinical data.
Experience
- Registered Nurse with at least 3 years post-registration experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in the mental health nursing practice in accordance with relevant standards.
- Demonstrated experience in the supervision and leadership of multidisciplinary staff.
- Experience working with Aboriginal consumers.
Desirable Characteristics
Education Qualifications:
- Where applicable, qualifications relevant to practice setting (Primary Mental Health).
- Tertiary qualifications in human services related discipline (Graduate Diploma or Masters level).
