The opportunity we have available

The Road and Vehicle Safety Division aims to improve road safety and reduce road trauma. The division has three main functions; setting the national policy direction for road safety through the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-30, the regulation of the first provision of vehicles in the Australian market including vehicle certification, imports, enforcement and vehicle recalls, and the provision of funding for a range of road safety initiatives.

The Vehicle Safety Policy and Partnerships Branch is responsible for driving the development and implementation of the legislation, procedures, guidelines, systems and workforce capability for the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) legislation. This extends to managing the national road vehicle standards, also known as the Australian Design Rules (ADRs). The Autonomous Vehicle Standards section collaborates with national and international stakeholders to develop a new regulatory framework for connected and automated vehicles. This includes developing new international regulations for automated driving systems and the implementation and review of domestic legislation, regulations and policies to support safe market access for automated vehicles.

What will you do?

You will work on the development of new standards and the regulatory framework for the future deployment of autonomous vehicles in Australia, including:

Work with international counterparts on the development of standards for autonomous vehicles, collaborating online, and potentially travel internationally, for meetings

Develop new and review existing national vehicle standards for autonomous vehicles

You will be encouraged to hone your expertise by representing the department in national and international forums and conferences held with engineering, government or other experts on autonomous vehicles. A typical work week for these roles may include:

Analyse and effectively communicate a variety of technical and policy documents such as developing impact analysis to support the development of new regulations

Conduct research to develop policy positions, which may include:

o Developing new proposals for international regulations

o Analyse data to identify trends

o Conduct research into the effectiveness of vehicle technologies

Draft and amend technical legislative instruments including the Australian Design Rules (ADRs)

Respond to complex national and international standards issues

Contribute and participate in meetings about technical vehicle issues with other colleagues and local and international experts

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate their capability against the APS6 Work level standards.

You will need to be able to understand vehicle technology on a technical level alongside the associated standards and regulations. While not required, a tertiary degree in engineering or a technology focussed STEM field will be considered favourably.

Additional skills and attributes that will be considered favourably:

Experience working within national and/or international standards setting frameworks.

Demonstrated stakeholder engagement, interpersonal and diplomacy skills.

Show strategic insight into future technology development and the role of regulation.

Be comfortable managing work with long lead times.
