Royal Australian Navy
Posted 3 days ago
Your role:
A Gap Year in the Navy gives you an exciting taste of life in the ADF with just one year’s commitment. You’ll get paid for meaningful work, receive full Navy training, and enjoy memorable experiences – unlike anything you’d encounter in a regular gap year.
In your Gap Year as a Navy Mechanical Engineer Submariner, you’ll shadow the Mechanical Engineer Submariners who lead teams of highly trained technicians. With their help, you’ll make sure the submarine’s mechanical engineering plant runs smoothly across its power, propulsion and auxiliary systems so that it is fully operational to undertake its mission.
Your 12-month experience is divided into stages. First, you’ll get paid to learn the military and job-specific skills you need for your role. Then you’ll post to a unit to apply your newly learned skills and you may have opportunities to travel around Australia to take part in domestic exercises and operations. Plus, you'll be supported by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel throughout your experience.
After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue a career in the Navy or you can use your new skills and experiences in future careers outside the ADF.
Your duties may include supporting teams who maintain and repair:
air conditioning and refrigeration systems
automatic and remote-control systems
diesel engines
electrical generation and distribution systems
hydraulic systems
propulsion systems
the submarine’s structure
ventilation systems.
Benefits of an ADF Gap Year in the Navy:
Unique 12-month experience

Experience life at sea and ashore
Develop leadership and management skills
Enjoy a good salary package
