Albany Youth Support Association is the leading Youth services organisation in the Great Southern with over 40 years of experience.

The position will be working a flexible .4 FTE with possibility to increase FTE

This position provides early intervention and preventative support to ‘At Risk’ young people predominantly 12 to 18 years of age with limited capacity for those aged 18 – 25 years. Supporting young people to connect with appropriate support services, family members, school staff, peers and their communities increasing their networks. Where appropriate provide general mentoring, advocacy, information, Case Management and referrals to specialised services.

The position will require considerable initiative in delivery of service, developing relationships/partnerships and has a significant amount of administrative and reporting requirements. This position is based between the AYSA Albany Youth Centre and the Denmark Senior Highschool, however it is predominantly mobile, outreaching to young people not currently engaged with local education providers and utilising community venues.

The service works with young people with complex needs and challenging behaviours who are likely to have experienced various forms of trauma and are exposed to multiple risks. The position uses positive approaches that build on skills and abilities to enhance strengths and further develop resilience. The Youth Worker will actively facilitate mentoring/ role modelling activities to engage with young people at risk which may at times include supporting community groups and / events and/or activities as a means of engagement.

Essential Criteria:

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Demonstrated sound interpersonal and communication skills

Understanding of issues effecting young people eg: substance use and mental health

Minimum Certificate IV Youth Work or alike and one year experience in education, youth services, or the not-for-profit services sector

Ability to engage and work with young people who have complex needs

Ability to assist life skill, recreation and routine development via case management and the development of specific programs when appropriate

Ability to communicate effectively with young people

Understanding of duty of care and Youth Work Code of Ethics

Computer literacy and time management / organizational skills

Ability to work some flexible hours, as required.

Knowledge of “Trauma Informed Practice” and “Strengths Based Models”

The occupant of this position will require the following prior to appointment:

Current C or C-A class drivers’ licence.

Current Senior First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain same on commencement.

Working with Children Check.

National Police Certificate (within six months) and Traffic Infringement/Conviction Records.

Certificate IV / Diploma in Community Services, Youth Services, or equivalent combination of experience

Must have commenced appropriate tertiary studies in above or meet the minimum experience required

Minimum one year experience working with youth or the not-for-profit services sector

You will be required to provide a current resume, two references relevant to your previous two years of employment, and a cover letter detailing your experience and skills in relation to the specified selection criteria.
