Principal Economist, two vacancies, Economic Strategy & Productivity

We are looking to fill roles across both the Macroeconomic Analysis, Research and Strategy (MARS) and Structural Analysis and Modelling (SAM) branches.

· Employment Type: Ongoing & Temporary (for a period up to 30 June 2026)

· Classification / Grade / Band: Clerk Grade 11/12

· Remuneration: $145,378 - $168,130; plus Superannuation and Leave Loading

As a Principal Economist, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality, evidence-based analysis and advice on current and prospective economic conditions. Your insights will directly influence government decision-making and policy development, making a tangible impact on the state's economic landscape.

What You’ll Do:

· Lead complex research projects and guide the team’s research agenda.

· Generate accurate macroeconomic forecasts and structural economic analyses to support the formulation of the State Budget and the NSW Intergenerational Report.

· Inform strategic economic policies through detailed and insightful analysis.

· Mentor and develop junior team members, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.

· Ensure the delivery of timely and relevant economic insights.

· Engage effectively with stakeholders to enhance the understanding of economic and fiscal trends and their implications.

This position not only influences the policy landscape but also drives the broader goals of the NSW Treasury.

What you can bring to the role.

In this integral role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

· Tertiary qualifications in Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, or a related field, or substantial experience in these areas.

· A strong track record of delivering quantitative analysis involving economic modelling and data analysis in a complex environment with a strong objective/customer focus.

· The ability to clearly convey technical and complex information in various forms appropriate to the audience and its purpose.

· High-level experience in analysing, forecasting, and reporting on developments, preferably for the Australian or NSW economies, by extracting insights from domestic and international macroeconomic data sources (e.g., ABS, RBA, Government budget papers, IMF).

· Proficiency in building models and/or applying critical perspectives across diverse policy issues to support economic forecasts and/or policy advice.

· Advanced capability in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and econometric software (e.g., Eviews, R or similar).

· Demonstrated ability to motivate a highly specialised team of economists to analyse data, build models, apply critical perspectives across diverse policy issues, and draw inferences to support policy advice and/or economic and revenue forecasts.

Eligibility
