Job Title: Oncology Nurse Practitioner (Hollywood Private Hospital)

Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time
Reports To: Consultant Medical Oncologist
Salary: $130,000 to 160,000 per annum pro rata
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and autonomous Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) to join our dynamic oncology team in delivering holistic, high-quality cancer care at Hollywood Private Hospital. This advanced practice role involves both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities across the continuum of care, including but not limited to; initial patient assessments, ongoing assessments, treatment facilitation, rapid response reviews, supportive care, survivorship, symptom management research and innovations in care delivery.
The ONP will work closely with medical oncologists, nursing staff, allied health, administrative teams, general practitioners, and other specialists to ensure integrated care. This position is integral to improving patient experience, streamlining care pathways, and supporting practice growth and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
Comply with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registration standards and Nurse Practitioner practice guidelines.
Deliver expert, autonomous patient care including assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, referrals, and test interpretation.
Conduct independent inpatient and outpatient reviews, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of oncology patients and supporting junior medical staff on the ward.
Conduct review of oncology patients at Hollywood Private Hospital and within the rooms of Hollywood Specialist Centre as needed and escalate to treating oncologist as appropriate.
Conduct telehealth consultations (video and phone) for follow-ups, symptom management, and supportive care.
Review and interpret pre-chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy blood results, triaging as required, and managing abnormal findings appropriately.
Prescribe and approve subsequent chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, including dose modifications and amendments to supportive care medications after prior initiation by the treating oncologist.
Manage care plans and medication regimens in line with clinical guidelines and collaborate with pharmacists and medical officers.
Prescribe and consent patients in need of blood product transfusions
Participate and lead Goals of Care discussions with patients and family members, and where appropriate complete Goals of Care forms for inpatients at Hollywood Private Hospital, in collaboration with the treating Medical Oncologist
Apply critical thinking to solve complex clinical problems.
Guide clinical staff on current policies and best practices.
Leadership & Practice Development
Contribute to the development of clinical pathways, care protocols, and internal guidelines.
Drive quality improvement and business development initiatives, enhancing service delivery and practice efficiency.
Mentor junior nursing and medical staff; participate in staff education and professional development sessions.
Support research initiatives, data collection, and audit processes in collaboration with the wider oncology team.
Clinical leadership and mentorship to support staff development and care delivery.
Foster positive relationships with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Engage in peer and case reviews as directed.
Contribute to workforce development and participate in relevant training opportunities.
Represent nursing in committees, projects, and inter-agency collaborations.
Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous learning.
Facilitate health education for patients and carers.
Multidisciplinary Coordination
Add patients to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and prepare comprehensive MDT summaries.
Liaise with GPs and specialists to coordinate care plans and ensure shared communication.
Participate in and, when necessary, lead family meetings for complex cases in clinic or ward settings.
Administrative & Supportive Care
Complete as legally authorised to do so; insurance forms, superannuation/disability documentation, medical certificates, and other third-party paperwork related to oncology care.
Assist with billing coordination in collaboration with the administration team, ensuring appropriate itemisation for MBS and private billing.
Coordinate admissions and discharges in collaboration with medical teams.
Organise and initiate blood transfusions, imaging, biopsies, or allied health referrals as needed.
Triage and respond to new patient referrals, including review of investigations and urgency grading.
Coordinate timely genomic sequencing requests with relevant molecular laboratories.
Clinical Support & Practice Coverage
Respond to patient queries regarding symptoms, treatment side effects, and medication management.
Provide clinic and ward coverage during specialist absence (planned leave or emergencies) within agreed scope of practice.
Serve as a point of contact for patients requiring holistic support, to optimise patient outocmes.
Governance, Safety & Quality
Lead quality and safety initiatives aligned with national health standards.
Participate in developing and evaluating policies and guidelines to ensure evidence-based practice.
Use digital tools to monitor and report clinical data and outcomes.
Ensure efficient use of resources and maintain culturally appropriate care delivery.
Adhere to all legislative and policy requirements including digital health governance.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
Endorsed as a Nurse Practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and registered with AHPRA.
Extensive experience (5+ years) in oncology nursing, with proven ability to work independently in an advanced practice role.
Demonstrated experience in prescribing and managing oncology-related medications and interventions.
Competence in using oncology software platforms such as CHARM, Gentu/Genie.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex conversations and multidisciplinary engagement.
Desirable:
Postgraduate qualifications in Oncology, Palliative Care, or Advanced Nursing Practice.
Experience with telehealth, community-based oncology, or regional/rural cancer services.
Familiarity with private and public sector oncology billing practices.
