About Kimberley Land Council
Join the Kimberley Land Council (KLC), a peak Indigenous organisation committed to empowering Kimberley Aboriginal people. Founded in 1978, KLC works tirelessly across the Kimberley region to achieve native title recognition, deliver environmental and cultural land management, and build sustainable, culturally-led enterprises.
Our mission is to support Traditional Owners to “get back country, look after country, and get control of the future.” We do this through collaborative legal work, strong corporate governance, and environmental programs including carbon and fire projects, the Kimberley Ranger Network, and our pioneering Two-Way Science initiatives.
As part of our team, you’ll help uphold Indigenous rights and contribute to tangible outcomes for community-led aspirations across Country.
About the Opportunity
Kimberley Land Council is looking for a full-time Senior Lawyer based in Broome, Western Australia.
This critical role reports to the Deputy Principal Lawyer and is responsible for delivering legal services related to native title, Aboriginal cultural heritage, and corporate governance. You’ll be working directly with native title parties, PBCs, and Traditional Owners to safeguard their rights, manage agreements, and build governance capacity.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Providing legal advice on native title claims, compensation claims, future acts, and land use agreements
Representing clients in litigation and mediation in the Federal Court and the National Native Title Tribunal
Advising on Aboriginal cultural heritage protections and governance obligations
Attending meetings with clients including directors’ and claim group meetings
Supervising and mentoring junior lawyers and contributing to their development
Ensuring compliance with applicable legislation including the Native Title Act and CATSI Act
Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams including anthropologists and future act staff
About You
To qualify, you will need to be admitted (or immediately eligible for admission) as a barrister or solicitor in the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia. While a minimum of five years' experience in legal practice is highly regarded, candidates with significant relevant expertise will also be considered.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
Native title, cultural heritage, or environmental law experience
Litigation experience in the Federal Court or equivalent jurisdictions
Legal advisory experience in mining, corporate governance, or land management
Governance experience with Indigenous corporations or PBCs
Strong stakeholder engagement and cultural competency
Experience supervising or supporting junior practitioners
A commitment to justice and equity for Aboriginal communities
As our ideal candidate, you’ll bring exceptional communication skills, empathy, and professionalism. You’ll be proactive, collaborative, and capable of navigating complex legal issues with care and integrity.
This is a career-defining opportunity to combine legal practice with social justice, working with and for Aboriginal people in one of Australia’s most culturally and environmentally significant regions.
