As the capital city of Western Australia, the City of Perth is a local government that is ambitious for the future. To achieve our goals, we seek exceptional people who understand that the City exists to enable and deliver the aspirations of the community.

The Opportunity
As a Senior Building Surveyor at the City of Perth, you will play a pivotal role in guiding development across our dynamic urban landscape. Contributing to the success of the Development Approvals Unit, you will provide high-level technical expertise, champion building compliance, and influence projects that shape the city’s built environment. From complex fire safety solutions to the oversight of building permits and approvals, your decisions will directly impact safety, innovation, and excellence in Perth’s architectural future.

You’ll be working alongside industry professionals, developers, and government agencies—solving complex regulatory challenges, mentoring a skilled team, and ensuring that our city’s building practices remain best-in-class. If you’re ready to set the benchmark for quality in both public and private sectors, this is your opportunity to lead with purpose and make a lasting impact.

Reporting to the Principal Building Surveyor within our Development Approvals team, your responsibilities would primarily include:

  • Exercise leadership and management skills, including the planning, monitoring, evaluation and control of building compliance and approvals for very complex projects;
  • Control and coordinate the risk management of building compliance by ensuring that buildings are safe to occupy and do not present an unacceptable risk to the public; and
  • Assist in the control and coordination of the preparation of building certificates which meet the requirements of the Building Act, other relevant statues, Local Laws and City policies, guidelines and procedures.

About You

  • Registered as a Building Surveyor Practitioner Level 2, and eligible to obtain Registered as a Building Surveyor Practitioner Level 1;
  • Specialist knowledge of the Building Code of Australia, related Australian Standards, relevant building approval processes and statutory requirements; and
  • Thorough knowledge of fire engineering and the Fire Engineering Guidelines with experience in producing or reviewing fire engineering and performance-based solutions.

If your experience and capabilities match these criteria, we welcome your application.

Above all, you will live our values of Commitment, Teamwork, Courage and Respect that allow us to come together to lead and support the community.

Please view the attached Application Pack to learn more about the role and working at the City.

  • A current ‘C’ class Australian drivers licence; and
  • A satisfactory National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months).
