Mackay Regional Council is offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our WHS & Emergency Management team as a Workplace Health & Safety Intern, with a focus on Rehabilitation and Return to Work (RRTW).

About this opportunity:

This internship will provide the successful candidate with a combination of on-the-job experience and formal training opportunities, designed to broaden knowledge, build practical skills, and enhance future employment opportunities within injury management and return to work.

This part-time role (5-day fortnight) is offered on a two-year fixed-term contract and includes support in completing a relevant formal qualification while gaining hands-on experience in a local government setting.

Key Responsibilities:

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator in liaising with medical and health professionals to ensure appropriate rehabilitation and treatment plans are provided.
  • Maintaining regular communication with injured employees, supervisors, medical practitioners, and Council's insurer.
  • Supporting the identification of suitable duties or alternative roles for employees unable to return to their pre-injury duties.
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining administrative and recordkeeping systems for injury management and return to work processes.
  • Promoting and supporting workplace safety initiatives to reduce incidents and improve wellbeing.
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of personal, medical, and sensitive data.
  • Performing other relevant duties as directed within the scope of the internship.

Essential Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

  • Willingness to complete a relevant qualification in Work Health and Safety (with course support provided by Council)
  • Current Queensland "C" Class Driver Licence.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive conversations and negotiate outcomes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital systems.
  • Positive, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement.

Desirable

  • BSBWHS407 - Assist with claims management, rehabilitation and return-to-work programs, or equivalent.
  • BSB41415 - Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or equivalent.
  • Experience in rehabilitation and return-to-work coordination, preferably in a diverse or multi-disciplinary environment.
