What We Offer Our Graduates

At the AIHW, we pride ourselves on the ongoing development of our staff. Our graduates are exposed to many learning and development opportunities early on and throughout their AIHW career. Within their first year of employment AIHW graduates can access a range of development opportunities including:

  • Formal induction
  • Training in various IT systems and statistical packages e.g., R and SAS
  • Many events that are specifically targeted to APS graduates
  • Individual coaching sessions
  • Writing workshops.

This all means you'll have opportunities and support to further your career at the AIHW.

Our graduates will have the opportunity to contribute to various projects and work in areas such as population health, community services, health services, housing, First Nations health and welfare, information management, and specialist technical and methodological support. We are seeking graduates with demonstrated experience and knowledge in:

  • Health or social sciences policy or practices or
  • Statistical analysis and data science.

To be successful in our generalist roles, you will have well-developed skills in one or more of the following: research design, data analysis and integration, interpreting and manipulating statistics, data governance and data management, reporting, and project management. You will also have qualifications or relevant work experience in one or more social and health science disciplines, including health economics, health information management, public health, epidemiology, humanities, sociology, psychology, and computer science.

Due to the technical nature of our work, we also have some specialised roles which focus on statistical analysis, data science and web content design and development. To be considered for these roles, you will have well-developed subject matter knowledge in areas including statistical methodology, information architecture, data linkage, machine learning, metadata, coding (SAS, Python, SPSS, STATA etc.), classifications
and terminologies, SNOMED-CT or XML data analytics, computer science, or programming.

You will also be able to manipulate and interrogate complex datasets using a range of software and be able to assist with the preparation of reports and publications.

For these more specialised roles, we are looking for graduates with qualifications or relevant work experience in statistics, demography, data science, mathematics, actuarial studies, accounting, data mining, science journalism, predictive modelling, or geospatial/GIS (geographic information system) mapping.
