The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse who practices with advanced scope of practice in an extended nursing role, continuing to give particular consideration to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient/client. This role will be permanent part time 24 hours per week.

The purpose of this role is to provide nursing care at an advanced scope of clinical practice including expanded skills and knowledge in assessment, care planning and implementation, diagnosis, and evaluation of nursing care for hepatology patients in the specialty area of Gastroenterology. This role works collaboratively with the interprofessional team and contributes to enhanced consumer/patient outcomes by actively leading and supporting existing and emerging nurse-led models of care whilst maintaining flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of the health service and consumer populations.

Nurse Practitioners practising at Mater Health Services practice within the relevant Standards for Nurse Practitioners as per the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, as well as other legislation, standard and codes that can impact or inform the evidence based practice of Nursing and are accountable for their own practice.

Salary range: $75.27 - $77.15 per hour plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

  • Practice autonomously and interdependently at an advanced clinical level, using a framework of evidence based clinical practice. Takes responsibility for the management of patients within own caseload and manages own workload to facilitate patient access within required timeframes
  • Provides an expert patient-centred consultancy practice participating in direct patient care provision across a series of services
  • Comprehensive patient assessment and management - interpreting data, providing diagnoses, and treating patients presenting with acute/complex illnesses within the specified scope of practice and model of care, and in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. This may include but is not limited to:
    a) Referral assessment and direction of referrals to other healthcare professionals
    b) Prescribing medications
    c) Ordering and interpreting results of diagnostic investigations
    d) Discharge planning and management
  • Reviews patient's risk factors and implements risk mitigation strategies
  • Provides education on complex clinical issues to patients and carers and other health care professionals
  • Offers a holistic service to patients and their families, developing where appropriate an ongoing plan of support/care with an emphasis on prevention and self-care.
  • Consults, communicates, and provides feedback to the relevant Medical Consultants, including the patient's General Practitioner, and other members of the healthcare team involved in the patient's care
  • Acts as a patient advocate ensuring patients are informed and consent is gained prior to treatment, investigation, and management as appropriate and assists/negotiates sensitively with patients where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Identifies and adopts innovative clinical practice models e.g. implementation and evaluation of new treatments, technologies, and therapeutic techniques relating to specialty within scope
  • Evaluates service outcomes with specific indicators and benchmarking an apply appropriate change management strategies as required
  • Conducts systematic reviews of clinical practice including, if requested and approved, for external organisations

About you

Essential:

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Endorsement/eligibility to obtain endorsement with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in specific clinical specialty (Gastroenterology – Hepatology)
  • Demonstrated ability to function autonomously and collaboratively in an expanded clinical role
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of quality improvement frameworks and processes, including the integration of contemporary nursing research to all clinical activities
  • Advanced level decision making
  • High-level interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with the ability to engage with internal stakeholders at various levels
