Who We Are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About the Role

Reporting to DSS Catchment Planning & Engineering Area Manager – West Region, this is a pivotal role within the DSS Catchment Planning & Engineering team.

This is a full time, permanent opportunity to be involved in the preparation of Development Services Schemes (DSS) and to manage critical Greenfield projects that ensure we achieve Melbourne Water’s commitment to Victoria’s Housing Statement.

This is a technical civil engineering role where experience in stormwater, asset design, project management, civil and land development engineering knowledge is preferred.

  • Project manage the planning and stormwater design of complex DSS projects such as managing critical precinct-scaled Greenfield projects to enable the delivery of Victoria’s Housing Statement, and project managing the engineering reviews of DSSs to ensure that they are robust from an engineering, finance, cultural heritage and environmental perspective.
  • Our successful candidate will have demonstrated professional backgrounds in end-to-end Project Management and are very proficient and comfortable in managing complex regional design projects to the value of $1m.
  • Your civil engineering and project management expertise will be relied upon as you undertake technical investigations, provide clear advice, make informed engineering decisions and exercise sound engineering judgement.
  • Experience in project planning means that you can expertly take projects through from planning to delivery. You can identify project risks and have the integrity to flag these that may impact on safety, quality, finance and timelines. You will keep the project/s ‘honest’ whilst keeping Melbourne Water true to its mandate to deliver for these new communities.
About You
  • A degree in Civil Engineering with experience working within the stormwater and land development industry (highly preferred)
  • You will lead and coordinate robust stakeholder engagement and communications, which includes communicating complex engineering matters to both technical and non-technical audiences. It goes without saying you have a reliable collection and ‘bank’ of experiences to draw from to ensure stakeholders are satisfied with the quantity and quality of information provided.
  • Have a solid reputation for and demonstrated background of respectfully and successfully partnering with key people on projects and communicating with a variety of stakeholders including consultants, local councils, government representatives, planning authorities, developers and community members.
  • Solid stakeholder engagement and influencing skills and know how to apply these to form and maintain positive and professional working relationships with all stakeholders as you work towards delivery of objectives.
  • Exceptional resilience and negotiation skills which will be utilised as you navigate complex issues, conversations, expectations and the general demands and priorities of the role. You have a work style that naturally lends itself to contributing to an inclusive workplace culture that is collaborative, professional and engaged.
  • Act as a mentor, guiding younger engineers within the team through technical challenges as well as offering advice on best practices and industry standards. Share your expertise and experience, ensuring younger staff have access to the necessary knowledge and resources.
  • Engineering registration check required

If you want to gain experience in the urban development space, are interested in a rewarding role where your work has an enduring impact on the community, we welcome your application.
