This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Criminal Law Practice. You will be providing high-level administrative support to solicitors in the practice which include data entry and front office duties.
- Organise client files for the next week’s court dates
- Input of statistical data into CMS Database
- Manage the reception area and operate the office phone system
- Provide secretarial support services to Criminal Law Solicitors
- Provide word processing support using Microsoft Office Systems, including correspondence, preparation of briefs, subpoenas, affidavits etc.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
- Capacity to behave in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Proven computer systems skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook and typing skills with a minimum of 35 wpm.
- Excellent phone manner and culturally appropriate communication skills when speaking with clients.
- Demonstrated organisational and time management skills and the ability to multi-task.

The ALS does legal work in Criminal law, children’s Care and Protection law and Family law.
