Your role:
As a Sonar Technician Nuclear Submariner, you'll play a key role in deploying Australia's first nuclear-powered submarines. You’ll manage and operate sonar and surveillance systems, ensuring they’re functioning correctly and providing crucial intelligence from underwater signals. Your expertise will support both operational missions and the maintenance of acoustic warfare capabilities at sea and on land.
You’ll also contribute to the training of new personnel and support roles within headquarters and training schools. Safety and security are top priorities, and you’ll undergo rigorous training in nuclear safety through the Nuclear Mindset, a set of principles that guides our workforce to protect people, the public, and the environment.
With paid training and ongoing support, you’ll learn to operate and maintain advanced electronics and surveillance equipment. As your career progresses, you’ll gain valuable skills and qualifications that open doors to various opportunities.
Your duties include, but aren’t limited to maintaining:
- Operating and maintaining sonars
- Operating and maintaining the towed array system
- Analysing sonar signals
- Collecting scientific data
- Acting as lookout at sea while your submarine is on the surface or sentry when in port.
As a submariner, you'll also perform additional general duties that support the whole submarine, including:
- Submarine security
- Emergency response (damage control)
- Assisting with stores, ammunitioning or ceremonial duties.

Salary:
Upon completion of your initial military and employment training, you’ll enjoy a salary package starting from $98,834.
Period of Service requirements:
General Entry Sailor roles now have an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS) between 2 and 3 years for all applicants.
Fitness requirements:
A Pre-entry Fitness Assessment (PFA) is no longer a requirement for Navy roles, except for Divers. To join the Navy, it's important that you meet the necessary medical and physical requirements. Regular exercise prior to joining will set you up for success as it is an important part of training and service life.
Once you join, Navy will support your physical conditioning to ensure you're prepared to serve. You'll also have access to chef-made meals, gyms, sports and fitness sessions run by physical training instructors.

For this role, you must be over 17 at time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen and have completed Year 12 (no ATAR required), with passes in Year 10 English and Maths.
