The Midland Information Debt and Legal Advocacy Service (Midlas) is a not-for-profit Community Legal Centre with offices in Midland and Ellenbrook that supports eligible clients in the north east Perth region with legal services, disability advocacy, financial counselling, financial capability and wellbeing, tenancy advocacy and community engagement and initiatives.
About You
The Disability Advocate will provide advocacy assistance to people with disabilities to represent their own views, needs and expectations to disability service providers, mainstream service providers, government departments, statutory authorities, courts and other bodies as required.
About the role
They will be responsible for directly advising, assisting and supporting clients with advocacy support around issues including:
Understanding disability rights and responsibilities
Resolving issues about government benefits, payments, pensions and support services
Access to services/supports that meet their needs and choices
Supported to participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives
Ensuring people with disabilities are treated justly and fairly
This position is part of a team approach to deliver advocacy services in line with government funded programs with key deliverables and targets.

Required Education/Licences/Certificates
Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in disability, community services or relevant field(s).
Possession of a current unrestricted driver’s license, comprehensive insurance for business use and a reliable vehicle
Current (less than 3 months old) pre-employment satisfactory national criminal history certificate and ongoing renewal every 2 years at employee’s expense.
Possession of a Working with Children Check
NDIS Worker Screening Check
Relevant Experience, Skills/Knowledge & Personal Attributes
Demonstrated experience in providing advocacy and an understanding of the disability sector in Australia and the disability models funded by the National Disability Advocacy Program
Demonstrated experience in providing advocacy for vulnerable people, including people with disabilities
Demonstrated understanding of the disability sector in Australia, including the NDIS
Knowledge of the disability sector, an ability to interpret issues for people with disability and their supports and the ability to work within the frameworks of the NDIS
Knowledge of the issues relevant to people living with various disabilities or disadvantaged/vulnerable groups and operating within a social justice framework, and the support systems designed to address these needs
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to be self-motivated, as well as an ability to work well in a team
Deliver on and work within funding KPI`s and targets
Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
Strong computer literacy, including the ability to learn new systems and platforms
Proficient in the use of MS Office and client database management systems
Ability to travel throughout the Perth metropolitan area
