About the role

As a Senior Machine Learning (ML) Engineer at Optain you will be at the heart of our technical R&D operations in Melbourne. Working closely with the other ML Engineers, your responsibilities will include:

Playing a leading role within the Machine Learning (ML) team, translating cutting-edge research into real-world solutions for the prediction of ophthalmologic and cardiovascular disease

Acting as a key liaison between the industries and academic institutions, fostering collaborative research initiatives

Providing support in the planning and execution of AI product clinical trials, contributing to the validation of the technology's effectiveness in the field

Improving and maintaining a robust ML-development ecosystem that will scale as the team expands

Being a key contributor to the Company’s AI strategic planning, aligning technological advancements with business objectives and market needs

Collaborating with fellow engineers, developers and designers within the team, fostering an environment of shared learning and delivering high-quality, technically-robust solutions

We are looking for a cross-functional team player with excellent communication skills. On a daily basis, you will work with internal and external collaborators from a range of technical and non-technical backgrounds.

Required skills & experience

5+ years working in applied machine learning (industry or PhD), with minimum 2 years computer vision industry experience

Tertiary qualification in relevant field (e.g. software engineering) is required, relevant postgrad studies are expected (e.g. master or PhD in relevant AI field)

Demonstrable expertise building, training and testing a variety of deep learning models including CNNs, RNNs, and Transformers

Expertise in Python and PyTorch, with a focus on creating efficient and maintainable code for machine learning applications

Hands-on experience with machine learning operations (MLOps) including model, dataset, and experiment versioning, experience with tracking and reproducing model lineage, and familiarity with experiment management tools like MLflow or Weights & Biases

Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Bonus points:

Experience building & training image-based Foundation Models

Class II or III Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) experience
