About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Fellow to engage in research and development of laser systems based on Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers (THz QCLs) and leverage their established record of achievement recognition in electronics.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop or design of new research products and technology.
  • Build new and/or improve existing research-focused engineering technologies, systems, prototypes, and processes.
  • Conduct advanced simulations, cost calculations, and feasibility studies pertaining to area of research.
  • Build prototypes and systems while adhering to cost structures.
  • Design complex testing procedures and protocols and coordinate to identify problems and solutions.
  • Collaborate on standards for procedures and component requirements.
  • Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.
  • Research:
  • Teaching: Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken, achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students. Improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You
  • Experience in using electronics laboratory equipment.
  • Experience in developing analog electronics printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Experience in developing digital electronics printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Experience in programming in Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL).
  • Experience with using Xilinx (AMD) Vivado Design Suite.
  • Experience in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) design, synthesis, development, and implementation using Xilinx tools and platforms.
  • Experience with Git distributed version control system for tracking versions of files.
  • Experience with Python programming language.
  • Experience with MATLAB (by MathWorks) computing environment
  • Completion of a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering.
  • An established profile in Electrical Engineering.
  • Essential skills:
  • Proficient in Verilog programming and simulation.
  • Experienced in Verilog regression testing, including the development, execution, and analysis of test suites to ensure design stability and functionality across multiple iterations.
  • Skilled in using LabVIEW to develop automated systems for data acquisition and instrument control, with expertise in designing user-friendly interfaces and optimizing system performance.
  • Strong background in designing and developing low-noise mixed-signal electronics.
  • Proficient in operating photonics laboratory equipment for testing, characterization, and experimental setup, including quantum cascade lasers.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing FPGA-based motion control systems.
  • Desirable skills:

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
