Life at Mission Australia
When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we stand together with anyone who needs us, for as long as they need us. Find out more about us and our purpose.

Your Opportunity
The Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS) provides a safe and supported short-stay residential environment to help young people aged 12-21 years manage their withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs and/or take time out from environmental influences and pressures.

Based at DAYS Carlisle, your role as a Residential Youth Worker is to actively engage young people, supporting them as they participate in the rehabilitation program. You will play a central role in teaching life skills, implementing positive coping strategies, and contributing to their long-term wellbeing within a trauma-informed, strength-based, and client-centred approach.

This role operates on a 24/7 rotating roster, requiring availability for a combination of day and night shifts.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Induct young people into the service, ensuring they understand their rights, responsibilities, and program expectations.
  • Develop positive and professional relationships with young people while maintaining clear boundaries of care practice.
  • Support young people in understanding their behaviours, developing beneficial coping strategies, and working towards their goals.
  • Provide practical assistance with daily activities, including meal preparation, personal care, hygiene, and self-administration of medication in line with policies and procedures.
  • Participate in case planning and case conferences alongside the Case Manager to monitor client progress.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment that upholds the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.
  • Manage crisis situations, applying Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) strategies to de-escalate behaviours and provide appropriate support.
  • Facilitate educational groups, life skills programs, and recreational activities to enhance young people's development.

Requirements for Success
To thrive in this role, you will have a strong background in the child, youth & family, and AOD sectors, with experience supporting young people in residential settings. Other key requirements include:

  • A Degree or Diploma in Social Welfare/Social Science or a Certificate IV in Community Services (or equivalent) with two years' relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth at risk with complex needs, including AOD issues, trauma, homelessness, mental health, and family violence.
  • Understanding of adolescent development and behaviour management, with the ability to set appropriate boundaries.
  • Knowledge of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and commitment to child safety policies and practices.
  • Completion (or willingness to complete) Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training within 12 months of employment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage young people and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, using initiative to problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • First Aid Certification
  • Full driver licence with no restrictions

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
