About the role

  • Provide support in a warm, non-clinical environment to individuals in distress or experiencing suicidal crisis, offering a much-needed alternative to busy emergency departments.
  • Collaborate with suicide prevention peer workers, sharing lived experience to create a supportive and empathetic space for individuals.
  • Connect clients with essential community-based services, such as housing, relationship counselling, financial assistance, drug and alcohol support, CALD services, and more to address the underlying causes of distress.
  • Ensure responsive care by operating outside of business hours, including weekends and public holidays, to offer timely and effective support when it's most needed.

About you

  • Personal lived experience of a suicidal crisis and/or attempt, and ability to meaningfully and purposefully use lived experience of suicide to provide peer support to people at risk of suicide.
  • Qualifications: Completion of Intentional Peer Support (IPS) and Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer), or the commitment to complete within 18 months, including suicide safety training (CHCCCS003) and additional relevant training.
  • Person-centered, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed approach to supporting individuals at risk of suicide.
  • Knowledge of the suicide prevention sector, including crisis response, safety planning, risk management, and a commitment to recovery-oriented services and lived experience involvement in service design.
  • Collaborative work skills with service users, families/carers, colleagues, NSW Health personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, time management, and negotiation skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft applications and effective written/verbal communication.
  • Experience in community-based health or social support settings, familiarity with NSW Health policies, and a valid driver's license.
