The Corporation

Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) is the incorporated body representing the Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Mardudhunera, Yaburara and Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo peoples, as Traditional Owners and Custodians of Murujuga.

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Murujuga Cultural Landscape is nominated for World Heritage Listing for its more than one million petroglyphs dating back over 50,000 years, its living cultural traditions spanning the same period, and as an outstanding example of human interaction with the environment through periods of significant climatic change.

The Role

The Database Officer will provide dedicated database and support to MAC’s Murujuga Land and Sea Unit (MLSU) Rangers, heritage staff, project researchers, and research collaborators. The role will involve fieldwork data collection support, maintenance of digital data and photographic systems, data auditing, and liaising with collaborating organisations to ensure appropriate management and sharing. The successful candidate will also provide training and technical assistance to project researchers and MAC personnel.

Responsibilities and Outline of Duties

Under the direction of MAC’s Heritage Manager, the Database Officer will:

Database and IT Management

  • Maintain and manage digital recording systems and records for rock art fieldwork and reference collections across the Dampier Archipelago.
  • Ensure the secure storage, organisation, and accessibility of digital heritage data.
  • Audit and manage legacy data within the Cultural Resource Audit & Management (CRAR+M) database.
  • Liaise with the CRAR+M Database Manager at UWA to ensure database synchronisation and data integrity.

Fieldwork & Training Support

  • Assist in field data collection processes, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
  • Provide training to MAC Rangers and project researchers on digital data collection tools and methodologies.
  • Support post-fieldwork clearances for rock art imagery and data validation.

Collaboration & Data Sharing

  • Participate in project meetings, workshops, and discussions to provide technical insights and recommendations.
  • Ensure that digital heritage data management aligns with MAC’s broader strategic and cultural objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as required, consistent with the position’s classification.
Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. Under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position with preference given to MAC language group members and culturally initiated or approved MAC applicants.
  2. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in computer operating systems, database management, and software applications relevant to digital heritage and environmental data.
  4. Experience in managing large datasets, digital storage solutions, and cloud-based platforms.

  6. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document processes, prepare reports, and provide training.
  7. Demonstrate a strong connection to Country and understand the cultural significance of Murujuga for the Traditional Owners.
  8. Knowledge of GIS, remote sensing, or digital mapping applications.

Desirable

  1. Experience working in Indigenous heritage, land management, or research projects.
