We are looking for a Tug Master with a strong work ethic, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to safety and teamwork, to join our team in Darwin, NT. The successful candidate must reside within a two-hour radius of our operations, and FIFO is not an option.
This is an initial 80% fixed-term part-time role for 12-months, with no set roster, requiring availability throughout the year for a minimum of 145 working days. You will receive a fortnightly salary based on an 80% pro-rated structure, with the current full-time equivalent salary for a Tug Master in Darwin set at $212,525 per annum (pro-rated is $170,020). Additional allowances will apply if your working days exceed the 145-day threshold. To provide flexibility, you can choose between two leave options: five days off per month with one 30-day block per year, or seven days off per month without block leave.

Located at the crossroads of Asia-Pacific trade routes, Darwin is a key hub for harbour towage, terminal towage, and naval operations, offering exciting opportunities in dynamic and high-stakes maritime environments. As a Tug Engineer, you'll be a key part of a three-person crew, responsible for operating and maintaining engines, deck machinery, and other essential equipment.
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Port Manager, your responsibilities will include:
Taking command of the tug and managing the crew
Coordinating crew attendance, provisioning stores, and ensuring operational readiness
Ensuring compliance with Svitzer policies and statutory obligations, including quality assurance and ISM procedures
Managing crew discipline and escalating issues when necessary
Supervising and assisting with tug maintenance
Preparing operational reports
Conducting induction training for visitors, employees, and authorized personnel
Leading and motivating the crew on safety management system compliance
Participating in safety training and operational improvement exercises
Adhering to roster arrangements and standing orders
What You Will Need To Succeed
To thrive this position, you will demonstrate:
Minimum Master 45m Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or equivalent
Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) or equivalent
Current statements of attainment in Provide First Aid and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
A current AMSA Medical applicable to your Certificate of Competency
A valid MSIC or 'Job Ready' MSIC Application (or proof of ability to obtain)
Prior experience as a Tug Master operating ASD tugs is highly advantageous for adapting to and ensuring safe and efficient operations
Proven ability to lead a crew effectively, fostering a collaborative and safety-focused work environment.
A calm and focused composure during high-pressure situations and emergencies.
Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written
Demonstrate resilience and problem-solving skills to handle unexpected challenges.
