The Forensic Chemistry Unit (FCU), Forensic Science Branch, Northern Territory Police Force provides analytical chemistry services to meet the needs of the Northern Territory Justice System.
The key duties of the Principal Forensic Examiner role in the FCU include:
- Analysis of biological samples and other liquids to determine alcohol concentration and presence of drugs in accordance with legislative requirements.
- Management of caseload, generation of expert reports and provision of expert evidence in court in line with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Develop, implement and validate new technologies in the field of forensic analytical chemistry.
- Develop and review methods and procedures for the Forensic Chemistry Unit and Forensic Science Branch.
- Ensure ISO/IEC 17025 and National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) forensic accreditation standards are maintained, including successful participation of proficiency testing programs.
- Provide expert advice and training to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) and Quality Management Program requirements are maintained.
- Provide leadership by mentoring and training others to achieve work outcomes and provide a high level of service to stakeholders.
- Perform duties in the other sections of the Forensic Chemistry Unit where required to meet operational requirements.
