Climbing / EWP Arborist
Position Purpose
The Climbing / EWP Arborist is responsible for carrying out tree maintenance, pruning, and removal using climbing techniques and Elevated Work Platform (EWP) machinery. This role requires a high level of skill in arboriculture, ensuring all work is conducted safely, efficiently, and to industry standards. The arborist will also be responsible for supporting ground crews, maintaining equipment, and adhering to safety regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Tree Work and Operations:
- Perform aerial tree pruning, dismantling, and removal using climbing techniques and EWP machinery.
- Implement appropriate rigging and lowering techniques to safely control tree sections.
- Conduct tree assessments and identify potential hazards or risks.
- Follow industry best practices in tree preservation and risk management.
- Implement tree maintenance plans, including pruning and disease management.
Equipment and Machinery Operation:
- Operate and maintain chainsaws, chippers, EWP machinery, and other arboricultural tools.
- Conduct daily pre-start inspections and report defects via the Codesafe platform.
- Assist in sharpening chainsaws and maintaining arborist tools.
- Ensure proper storage and transportation of all equipment and machinery.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct and participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
- Comply with traffic management plans and ensure site safety.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses to supervisors promptly.
- Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
- Ensure emergency response protocols are in place and understood by all team members.
Customer Service and Team Collaboration:
- Communicate professionally with clients, providing updates and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Support the team by assisting in various arboriculture tasks as required.
- Foster a positive workplace culture and collaborate with colleagues.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices and ground crew members.
Asset Management:
- Ensure all company equipment is properly maintained and in safe working condition.
- Report any damage or maintenance needs through the Codesafe platform.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment use and servicing.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Compliance with safety regulations and zero lost-time incidents.
- Efficiency in task execution and job completion timelines.
- Positive client feedback and satisfaction.
- Proper maintenance and operational readiness of equipment.
- Contribution to training and development of junior arborists.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Physically fit to handle demanding tasks such as lifting, climbing, and operating heavy machinery.
- Availability for early starts and occasional weekend work.
Tools & Technology:
- Familiarity with Codesafe, GPS tracking, and scheduling software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and operational management tools.
- Knowledge of arboricultural machinery and tools.
Reporting & Documentation Responsibilities:
- Ensure all worksite documentation is accurately completed and filed.
- Conduct regular reviews of safety reports and compliance records.
- Provide operational reports to Site Supervisors.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Certificate III in Arboriculture (or equivalent qualification and experience).
- Proven experience in climbing and using EWP machinery for tree work.
- Strong knowledge of tree species, pruning techniques, and arboricultural best practices.
- Proficiency in chainsaw use and maintenance.
- Ability to perform manual labor in a physically demanding outdoor environment.
- High level of safety awareness and compliance with OH&S regulations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to assess tree health and safety.
Desirable:
- Valid Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) truck license.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Traffic management certification.
- Experience mentoring or training junior arborists or apprentices.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Site Supervisor / Leading Hand Arborist
Works closely with: Ground Crew, Site Supervisors, and Production Managers
Supervises: Apprentice Arborists and Ground Crew (as needed)
