Your day as a Senior Advisor (Data and Reporting)
Your typical day-to-day work as a Senior Advisor (Data and Reporting) involves leading projects, processes, and analysis using large data sets to support process improvement initiatives and improved insights for decision making as part of the delivery of the budget.
The role requires working closely with teams across NSW Treasury (including policy, financial and IT teams) and the NSW Public Sector to support advice to Treasury’s Leadership Team, the Treasurer’s Office, and the Expenditure Review Committee of Cabinet.
A key aspect of the role is analysing agency and whole-of-government financial data to identify trends, develop insights and communicate clear recommendations on the efficient use of public resources to decision makers.
The Budget Management and Control team was recognised in the 2023 Treasury Awards for demonstrated exceptional performance and contribution to outcomes on a regular basis in the execution of their duties.
The team is now leading a new high-profile Treasury project to upgrade the State’s budget system, Prime, and deliver enhancements to budget processes and reporting to strengthen financial management. A key focus of this project is providing higher quality and more timely insights and analysis that drive impactful decisions. This will involve automating workflows, eliminating repetitive tasks and designing innovative dashboards to support decision making. This project will also support delivery of the Performance and Wellbeing Framework being developed to measure and track progress on key government reforms.
This role will play an important role in delivering these projects and reforms.

Achieve success as Senior Advisor (Data and Reporting)
In this integral role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW.
The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria. You don’t need to check every box; however, we are looking for a good combination of:
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency with public sector budgeting, reporting, financial management and financial systems in NSW or other jurisdictions.
- Experience solving problems using large financial datasets and applying modelling to provide insights and recommendations to decision makers
- Experience identifying opportunities to enhance data workflows and automate repetitive tasks
- Experience with leading projects, policies or process reforms from concept to completion.
- Demonstrated ability and desire to work collaboratively as part of a high-performing team.
- Proficiency with tools and technologies such as: Excel, VBA Macros, Python, PowerQuery, PowerBI, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), SQL, Snowflake, Oracle Hyperion, SmartView, Jira and Prime viewed favourably.
- Tertiary qualifications or demonstrated professional experience in one or more of accounting, finance, economics, data science statistics, computer science a related discipline.
