About the Role
The City of Sydney Council is seeking an innovative and strategic leader to drive the development and implementation of a cutting-edge resource recovery strategy and service delivery framework. This role is pivotal in ensuring the City's waste management, street cleaning, and materials recycling services are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with the City’s broader environmental goals.
Key Responsibilities
As the Manager, City Cleansing and Resource Recovery, you will be responsible for leading and shaping waste management strategies to reduce landfill waste while promoting reuse, recycling, and recovery initiatives. You will oversee the delivery of high-quality street cleaning and waste management services, ensuring optimal efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and service excellence.
A key focus will be on monitoring and evaluating the performance of all service operations to continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness, meeting the evolving needs of the community. You will also be responsible for the development of employee training and operational improvements, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovative work practices within work teams.
You will lead the implementation of technical strategies and quality control processes to enhance business performance and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Managing key contracts, assessing risks, and addressing operational challenges will be an essential part of your role. Additionally, you will provide strategic direction in achieving the City’s waste management targets and sustainability objectives, in alignment with Sustainable Sydney 2050 and the Environmental Strategy.
The role also requires preparing and managing annual budgets, ensuring financial performance aligns with approved expenditure, and balancing stakeholder expectations with operational priorities in this highly visible service area.
Key Challenges
Success in this role will require navigating complex stakeholder expectations while balancing operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. You will drive cultural change within teams, embedding continuous improvement initiatives and fostering a proactive approach to waste management. The high-profile nature of these services means you must ensure transparency and responsiveness in meeting community and organisational expectations.
Qualifications & Experience
To excel in this role, you should have extensive experience in waste management, resource recovery, or environmental services, with a proven track record in leading operational teams and delivering strategic initiatives. Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements, best practices in waste minimisation, and experience in contract management and performance evaluation are essential. Leadership skills, coupled with the ability to drive change and innovation, will be key to success in this role.
Why Join Us?
Join a forward-thinking Council dedicated to sustainability and environmental excellence. This is an opportunity to lead transformative initiatives that will shape the future of waste management and resource recovery in Sydney.
