In this role you will be required to undertake any of the following:

  • Maintain a high level of professional knowledge and skill in SMS practices and contribute to the knowledge and support to the SMS teams to ensure continued and effective operations and prisoner management.
  • Contribute to the efficient use of cell capacity through the interview and assessment of prisoners for low classification and placement.
  • Disseminate SMS documents and information to new custodial admissions and long stay prisoners accommodated in Queensland Hospitals (excluding Queensland Mental Health).
  • Contribute to legislative reforms which impact on prisoner classification and placement, sentence calculation and administration.
  • Contribute to and the oversight of initiatives pertaining to the development and implementation of legislation, policies, procedures, and standards for SMS.
  • Complete detailed requests for legal advice relating to complex sentence management questions.
  • Represent QCS in legal matters relating to sentence management operations.
  • Oversight the amending and updating the Sentence Calculation and Administration Manual, SMS Custodial Operations Practice Directives (COPD), Oversight Controls, Reporting Services, IOMS enhancements and any other sentence management functions.
  • Provide high level timely advice to executive and senior management regarding the identification, analysis of and, where necessary, the assessment of risk mitigation strategies for incidents relating to SMS practices including: capacity utilisation, classification and placement decisions, unlawful detention and discharges in error, and privacy breaches.
  • Provide high level advice to senior management and SMS staff regarding sentence management practices and processes, and the interpretation of court orders and legislation,
  • Prepare high quality written communication including briefing notes and correspondence in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Prepare and distribute field communications on behalf of Senior Management Services which may include, but is not limited to, factsheets, legal advice or practice changes.
  • Consult the Queensland Corrective Services Academy (QCSA) regarding the delivery of sentence management training programs and coordination of forums.
  • Engage with key stakeholders regarding SMS matters on behalf of QCS,
  • Respond to enquiries from both internal and external stakeholders and prisoners concerning prisoner management matters.
  • Manage workload and negotiate priorities for the completion of work within the portfolio.
  • Effectively contribute to SMS operations to ensure required outcomes are achieved, including providing operational backfill for other sentence management roles/functions as required.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of human resource practices, experience in staff management and an ability to mentor staff to achieve results.
