Role Type: full time PhD
Salary: RTP scholarship of $38,500 p.a.

The opportunity:
We are seeking PhD candidates to join the Translational Microbiology Group. Candidates will conduct research dedicated to understanding the pathogenesis of respiratory pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) and Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus). You will have access to first-class facilities to conduct high-quality, impactful research. During your candidature, you will learn a range of skills, which may include handling clinical samples, molecular biology (DNA/RNA) work, genetic manipulation of streptococci, microbial and cell culture techniques (cell lines and primary cells), bioinformatics/genomics, and animal models of bacterial infection. You will also have access to opportunities for professional development, training, mentoring and support. Successful candidates will be expected to apply for a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship or equivalent at The University of Melbourne. Top-up scholarships of $7,500 p.a. pro rata are available on a competitive basis.
The Translational Microbiology Group is focused on discovering better ways to detect and prevent diseases caused by bacterial pathogens of major global health importance. Our focus is on investigating how infections can be best diagnosed and prevented with vaccines, as well as discovering how these pathogens colonise, transmit and cause disease. We collaborate closely with clinicians, epidemiologists and immunologists, including in countries in the Asia-Pacific region, to facilitate translation and global impact.
Your responsibilities include
- Generate, collate and analyse data for formal documentation (e.g. publications, thesis)
- Undertakes high caliber competitive research
- Conducts continuous maintenance of neat and orderly records, log books and data storage
What we need from you:
- Honours or Master's degree in Microbiology (or related discipline)
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Excellent time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Eligibility to apply for a Melbourne Research Scholarship and Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship or equivalent at the University of Melbourne
