The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) is currently seeking applications for multiple EL1 Senior Lawyers, to join the Legal Services Branch.

These positions can be located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney or Perth. After an initial period of training/onboarding, flexible working arrangements can be offered.

These positions are non-ongoing for a period of 12 months with a possibility of an extension or ongoing.

Remuneration: The annual salary range is EL1 - $117, 665 - $138,493 p.a plus a generous employer superannuation contribution of 15.4%.

About the opportunity:

The Legal Services section comprises in-house lawyers who provide legal services and support related to the application of the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024, the Administrative Review Tribunal Regulations 2024, the Administrative Review Tribunal Rules 2024 and the broad range of legislation covering the jurisdiction of the Tribunal and our corporate responsibilities. We provide a range of services and products to support Tribunal members, staff and executive to perform their duties lawfully and efficiently.

The section is led by Principal Lawyers (EL2) and consists of geographically dispersed Senior Lawyers (EL1) and Lawyers (APS 5 and APS6) as well as a small number of legal administrative staff. The section has a presence in each of the Tribunal’s Registry locations across the country and offers opportunities to work within one or across multiple jurisdictional areas of specialisation such as Migration, Protection, Social Security, Child Support, National Disability Insurance Scheme and Corporate Law.

The key duties of the position include:

  • Legal support: Undertake legal research and provide legal advice/opinions and support to members and staff in relation to the administrative review of decisions within the ART’s jurisdiction and/or corporate responsibilities.
  • Legal information maintenance: Assist with the development, maintenance and delivery of legal support resources and training for members and staff.
  • People management: Supervise and lead lawyers and/or support staff within the section when required.
  • Stakeholder management: Maintain strong, productive relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

About you:

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Highly developed legal research and analysis skills and an ability to provide legal advice and opinions on complex issues relevant to the ART, particularly administrative law, and matters relevant to one or more jurisdictional areas of the ART.
  • Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a dynamic workload, manage competing priorities, plan time effectively and deliver workplace goals within set timeframes.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively as part of a small team, including developing and maintaining team cohesion and promoting initiative, flexibility and change in the workplace.
  • Ability to provide leadership in promoting and implementing workplace diversity principles and participative, safe, and healthy work practices.
  • Knowledge of the operations, jurisdiction, practice and procedure of the ART or a demonstrated capacity to acquire that knowledge quickly

Qualifications/Experience

Essential:

  • Admission, or eligibility to be admitted, as a legal practitioner, however described, of the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory is required, or
  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, a current unrestricted practising certificate.
