About Your Role

Multiple disasters over the last two years including drought, bushfires, floods, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the mice plague, have had compounding and unprecedented impacts on NSW communities.

Disaster Recovery Specialists (DRS) across regional and rural NSW provide assertive outreach support for communities, and coordination with local services at the time of a disaster or crisis, and during the ongoing recovery phase.

This position works as part of a whole of government response to disasters and includes:

  • work collaboratively with existing health services, regional hospitals and emergency services agencies in the fire affected communities.
  • work within a stepped care framework in collaboration with general practitioners, allied health professionals, schools, public mental health services, and private psychologists and psychiatrists.
  • work closely with Primary Health Networks to ensure people are able to access the right level of mental health care for their individual needs.
  • The objectives of the NSW Disaster Recovery Program are to:

  • ensure that individuals affected by disaster can access appropriate and timely clinical services to deal with mental health needs arising from the fire
  • target vulnerable population groups across the region
  • ensure emergency services staff and volunteers can access appropriate and timely clinical services to deal with mental health needs arising from the fires

As the position is time limited, finishing in June 2023, a key function will be planning for transfer of care for any service users requiring ongoing mental health treatment and care.
