Role impact & contribution

The Federal Financial Relations branch within the Revenue Division plays a crucial role in advancing NSW priorities at the national level. It ensures the Federation supports NSW in improving residents' wellbeing by driving national productivity reforms and negotiating funding agreements.

The branch supports government decision-making, policy development, and provides strategic analysis and advice on federal financial relations. It focuses on researching, analysing, and advising on the distribution of the national GST pool and Australia's system of horizontal fiscal equalisation (HFE).

Additionally, it acts as a liaison between NSW Treasury and the Commonwealth Grants Commission, supporting annual GST determinations. As a Principal Economic Advisor, you will lead the delivery of high-quality economic advice and analysis related to HFE and GST, provide insights on financial and economic impacts, analyse reform priorities, and support stakeholder engagement and GST revenue forecasting.

What you can bring to the role

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Economics, Statistics, Public Policy, Law, or relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in providing strategic policy or commercial advice and/or economic analysis in a data-driven environment with a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to motivate a team to analyse data, apply critical perspectives across diverse policy issues, and draw inferences to support policy advice and/or economic and revenue forecasts.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly convey technical and complex information and analysis to various audiences, including the Treasurer and senior executives, in appropriate formats (verbal, written, and visual).
