Department of Health Tasmania
Posted 4 days ago
The Role and Team:
The Department of Health is seeking motivated and experienced Medical Practitioners to work as part of the Department of Emergency Medicine across Tasmania’s North West Region. The North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) is a modern facility that provides acute care facilities for residents of the North West region of Tasmania. It is also a University Teaching Hospital for the Rural Clinical School of the University of Tasmania.
We have one remaining vacancy for a six-month rotation as a Registrar in Anaesthetics at the NWRH, commencing as soon as possible. The department is accredited for ANZCA training, and provides services for operative anaesthesia, day procedures and scope lists, the acute pain service and obstetric anaesthesia for the hospital. You will be supervised by RANZCA Fellows and will work on a 24/7 rotating roster. If you are a trainee on a specialist training program you may be eligible for increased support through the Specialist Training Program option available in the NW. If you are an ACEM trainee we are also able to offer further training time in the ED following on from this role. The NWRH performs general, orthopaedic, obstetric and gynaecological and ENT surgical procedures. There is ICU availability for the care of complex post-operative patients. Theatres provide access for both elective and emergency cases.
The NWRH Emergency Department has an annual attendance rate of 28,000 patients per year with 28% admission rate. NWRH is the Regional Trauma Centre, and provides inpatient care for medicine, surgery, orthopaedic, paediatric, obstetrics, gynaecology and mental health patients. It supports a large outpatient department which along with local services, provides tertiary outreach services from the Royal Hobart hospital and extensive Oncology services. It is also the referral centre for several district hospitals including King Island.
There are currently 12 Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEMs) working alongside other senior clinical staff. The level of FACEM direct supervision and teaching is excellent. The NWRH is an ACEM Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) hub for the North West of Tasmania and there is an opportunity to complete the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate, the Associateship in Intermediate Emergency Medicine and the Associateship in Advanced Emergency Medicine at this hospital. There is also an opportunity for registrars to participate in reciprocal learning as part of the EMET programme travelling to rural sites, providing education to providers of emergency care in remote and beautiful locations under FACEM supervision
The NWRH Emergency Department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for twelve months training in Emergency Medicine with approval for completion of Paediatric Emergency Requirements. The department is also accredited for Advanced Skills Posts in Emergency Medicine for both ACCRM and RACGP and we encourage trainees from these colleges to apply.
The award allows for generous relocation costs and residential support, and registrars are now paid 10 hours education time (FTE) in addition to their contracted 76 hours per fortnight.
