About the role
The Legal team within the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport have a fantastic, ongoing opportunity for a Principal Legal Officer focusing on commercial and regulatory services to join the team.
As Principal Legal Officer you will provide clear, concise legal advice across a range of commercial transactions relevant to the Department including contracts, licenses, intellectual property, grants and procurement to maximise operational objectives.
The role is responsible for providing strategic, pragmatic, solution focused and accountable specialist legal advice and strategy across a range of areas covering ICT, corporate, commercial and regulatory areas. This will include advice on contractual performance, agreements, dispute resolution, instructions to external legal advisors and briefing external legal counsel to ensure legal issues are addressed and fully accounted for to maximise outcomes for the Department.
The ability to distil complex legal issues for the business and prepare documents including advice, submissions and other legal documentation, briefing notes and correspondence is an integral component of the role.
The Principal Legal Officer will work collaboratively and flexibly with clients and other key stakeholders on a range of legislative projects and requests for advice to exchange information, complete tasks and develop solutions to ensure achievement of corporate objectives, compliance with deadlines and governance frameworks so that stakeholder expectations are met.
This role will be accountable for providing the highest level of legal services, advocacy and advice to clients, senior management and staff, in accordance with legislative requirements, policies, procedures, guidelines, precedents and practice standards, to ensure consistent, quality services are delivered, and outcomes are improved for the Department.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Commercial law;
- Trade practices law;
- Administrative law;
- Information access and privacy law; or
- Experience in the policy making and legislative process.
It is essential that you are admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practicing Certificate.
