The Opportunity
The Kids Research Institute, Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines & Infectious Diseases (WCVID) is a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary centre whose vision is to reduce the impact of infectious diseases through excellent and innovative research and partnership with families and community. Ensuring our research occurs in partnership with community and is guided by a strong Aboriginal voice is essential in our work. This includes developing a research career pathway for Aboriginal students to join the WCVID.
We have a position available for an Aboriginal Senior Project Officer for the WCVID who will lead and implement both a successful research career pathway for Aboriginal students and a support program for Aboriginal staff and students in the WCVID.
This is an exciting position that will see you leverage on your passion to connect with people to develop strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders and community to develop a strategic and operational research pathway program for Aboriginal students, while also supporting current Aboriginal staff in the WCVID.
You will have an opportunity to initiate and lead various activities with your key areas of focus including, research pathway implementation, collaboration and stakeholder management and engagement, developing resources including training materials, and providing support and mentorship.
Some of your responsibilities include:
- Exploring strategies for recruiting, training and retaining Aboriginal students to take up a career in research.
- Identifying changes required within the WCVID to ensure it is a culturally safe place of employment that is supportive and inclusive.
- Providing training resources and advice to non-Aboriginal staff and students.
- Providing support and mentorship to our Aboriginal staff and students.
- Building effective relationships with the Aboriginal community, ACCOs, and Aboriginal University Centres.
Based at The Kids, at the Perth Children’s Hospital, this 3-year fulltime position, with flexible hours/days for the right candidate, is a great opportunity to join a dynamic and passionate team.
About You

The key to your success will be your demonstrated experience/ skills in the following:
- Evidence of strong and sustained relationships with Aboriginal communities.
- Demonstrated ability to embed culturally responsive practices in all aspects of your work.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Experience in mentoring and supporting Aboriginal staff and or students.
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field or demonstrated relevant experience.
