The Department of Education and Victorian government schools have teaching positions available across the State, providing opportunities for teachers to work in schools in metropolitan, regional, and rural settings, in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Specialist schools.

What roles and opportunities are available?

Working in Victorian Government Schools provides you with the opportunity to be in a range of settings including Primary Schools, Special Schools, Secondary Colleges and more.

Primary school teacher:

Primary school teachers walk their students through their first steps at school and lay the foundation of education from Foundation (Prep) to Grade 6 (approx. ages 5 to 12). You will teach students across an array of learning areas including:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Technology
  • Physical Education
  • the Arts
  • studies of society and environment

Secondary school teacher:

In secondary school, teachers prepare their students for life ahead and motivate students to pursue their passions and provide them with all the best opportunities to succeed after school (approx. ages 12 to 18). We are looking for teachers of:

  • Humanities
  • Health & Physical Education
  • English
  • Science and Maths
  • Languages
  • Art/Textiles

Special school teacher:

In a special school, teachers are dedicated to delivering specialised learning programs for students with a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties from Foundation (Prep) to Grade 6 (approx. ages 5 to 18).

Who May Apply

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

Conditions of Employment

All staff employed by the Department and schools have access to a broad range of employment conditions and working arrangements.

Appointment of successful applicants will be made subject to a satisfactory pre-employment conditions check.

A probationary period may apply during the first year of employment and induction and support programs provided.

VIT Lantite

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person
