The Team
The Communication, Education and Engagement Branch is a specialist team of skilled practitioners in the field with extensive electoral experience. The Branch is responsible for the delivery of communication, education and community engagement products and activities that are engaging, accurate and inclusive.
Electoral Educators / Trainers support the provision of AEC training and education programs within the National Training and Education Unit, including program delivery at the National Electoral Education Centre (NEEC) located at Old Parliament House, Canberra. The NEEC is the flagship of the AEC’s current education program offering and welcomes schools from across Australia who visit Canberra institutions as part of annual civics and citizenship excursions. The NEEC accommodates approximately 95,000 in person visitors annually (primarily year 5 and 6 students). The NEEC is also exploring the development of digital education program options such as live-streamed and pre-recorded virtual education sessions.
The Opportunities
As an Electoral Educator / Trainer you will be responsible for undertaking work that is moderately complex in nature, under general direction, utilising practical expertise within the area of education and training. This includes regular delivery of face-to-face education programs, administrative tasks and contributing to program development.
You will present education sessions about Australia’s Federal Electoral system and facilitate engaging learning activities for in-person visitors to the NEEC. This will include planning and preparing for the delivery of training and education programs, including setting up the learning area, ensuring all appropriate resources are available, tailoring presentations to the audience as appropriate, and ensuring technology is working appropriately and ready prior to the commencement of a session. You will be required to learn all programs offered by the NEEC.
You will also contribute to the continual development, implementation and evaluation of our training and educational programs ensuring inclusive and modern educational techniques are utilised. You may participate in external engagement for a variety of events and audiences. You may also produce and deliver digital programs via live-streamed and pre-recorded virtual education sessions to schools and other electoral stakeholders. From time to time, you may perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed by the leadership team.
To excel you’ll have:
- Demonstrated professional experience delivering education or training sessions in a clear, concise and well-structured way using language appropriate to your audience.
- A demonstrated ability to work autonomously to deliver objectives, and a strong commitment to working harmoniously within a team to achieve positive results.
- Commitment to achieving quality outcomes through adherence to documented procedures.
- An ability to anticipate issues and problems which could impact on your designated tasks, and the ability to see tasks through to completion under guidance from your supervisor.
- An ability to remain positive and respond to pressure in a calm manner and the ability to respond in a positive and flexible manner to competing priorities and change.
- Demonstrated personal integrity, including taking personal responsibility for accurate completion of work and seeking guidance when required.
- Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain knowledge of the Australian electoral law and practice.
Desirable
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in education, teaching or training are highly desirable.
- The Centre’s hours of operation are 7.15am-6.15pm, Monday-Friday. Availability/flexibility within these hours is highly desirable, as is the capacity to work full time hours during surge periods.
- Experience in delivering or producing education or training sessions in a digital environment is highly desirable, such as live-streamed or pre-recorded sessions.

- AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
- Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
