The Personalised Medicine Centre (formally the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Innovative Therapeutics) and headed by the Director forms part of Murdoch University's commitment to excellence in health and medical research. The Centre brings together researchers and clinicians from across the university and Perron Institute to apply the tools of personalised medicine to the treatment and diagnosis of an increasing range of diseases.
Your New Role!
The Research Officer is expected to carry out activities to develop scholarly research and professional expertise relevant to the discipline and make contributions to the research effort of the Centre. You will focus primarily on nucleic acid drug development and the evaluation of the efficacies in cultured cells (in vitro) and animal models (in vivo). This role will require significant expertise in the use of induced pluripotent stems cells in drug screening to meet the requirements of specific research studies.
Your key responsibilities will include -
- Assisting the Project Lead in the design and conduct of experiments using induced pluripotent stems cells and/or differentiated cells in drug screening.
- Design and conduct experiments using tissue culture, molecular biology, and immunochemistry.
- Develop antisense therapeutics for rare and inherited diseases.
- Perform research into the manipulation of transcript splicing to modify gene expression for the desired outcomes, using antisense oligomer-based techniques and apply for normal and patients' cells in vitro and in vivo animal models.

This Fixed Term (1 year) | Full Time (37.5 hours per week) position attracts a remuneration of $87,000 - $105,000 plus 17% employer superannuation contributions.

Selection Criteria:
- Completion of a degree with Honours or postgraduate qualification and/or with subsequent combination of relevant work experience.
- Experience in the use of induced pluripotent stems cells and cellular differentiation processes.
- Experience in working under broad direction, exercise initiative in undertaking responsibilities and work effectively as a team member.
- Ability to engage in high quality research funding, either independently or as part of a research team.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute intellectually to research collaborations, publications, project designs and grant writing.
- Ability and commitment to successfully assist with the supervision of honours, postgraduate and HDR students in new techniques and laboratory procedures.
