Royal Australian Navy
Posted 11 days ago
Your role:
A Gap Year in the Navy gives you an exciting taste of life in the ADF with just one year’s commitment. You’ll get paid for meaningful work, full Navy training, and enjoy memorable experiences – unlike anything you’d encounter in a regular gap year.
On an Electronics Engineer Gap Year, you’ll discover what it’s like to be one of the Navy’s electronics and combat systems experts. Whether onboard a ship, submarine or ashore, you’ll shadow the Navy's expert Electronics Engineers as they go about their duties, managing teams of technicians, coordinating and scheduling tasks, and providing advice to Command.
Your 12-month experience is divided into stages. First, you’ll get paid to learn the military and job-specific skills you need for your role. Then you’ll post to a unit to apply your newly learned skills and you may have opportunities to travel around Australia to take part in domestic exercises and operations. Plus, you'll be supported by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel throughout your experience.
After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue a career in the Navy or you can use your new skills and experiences in future careers outside the ADF.
Your duties may include:
- operating and maintaining sophisticated combat, communication, navigation, radar, sonar and weapons systems
- contributing to Navy exercises and operations.
Benefits of an ADF Gap Year in the Navy:

Submariner:
There is also the option to specialise as an Electronics Engineer Submariner where you’ll spend 12 months discovering what it’s like to work onboard one of Australia’s most important strategic assets – a Navy submarine. You’ll work alongside the Navy's expert Electronics Engineers and have the opportunity to contribute to operations onboard the submarine.
Salary:
You'll be paid while you train, and on completion of your Initial Military Training, you’ll earn at least $47,705, plus 16.4% superannuation.
