Your role:

A Gap Year in the Army gives you an exciting taste of life in the ADF with just one year’s commitment. You’ll get paid for meaningful work, receive full Army training, and enjoy memorable experiences – unlike anything you’d encounter in a regular gap year.

During your Artillery Gap Year, you’ll be part of the team that sets up, aims and fires some of the Army’s most powerful weapons. You’ll challenge yourself and learn to operate effectively in a range of different environments as you contribute to the protection of Australia.

Your 12-month experience is divided into stages. First, you’ll get paid to learn the military and job-specific skills you need for your role. Then you’ll post to a unit to apply your newly learned skills and may have opportunities to travel around Australia to take part in domestic exercises and operations. Plus, you'll be supported by professional and enthusiastic Army personnel throughout your experience.

After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue a career in the Army or you can use your new skills and experiences in future careers outside the ADF.

Duties:

Your duties depend on which role you enter and could be:

  • physical training
  • weapon handling and shooting
  • first aid
  • drill
  • field craft

One you complete your Initial Military Training, you’ll grow your skills and expertise in one of the following roles:

Artillery Observer – use high-tech equipment to locate enemy targets and gather battlespace intelligence

Artillery Operator – harness your agility and ability to work quickly and be part of the team that sets up, aims and fires one of the Army’s most powerful weapons

Artillery Systems Operator - use advanced surveillance equipment to understand the battlefield, identify targets and produce and communicate firing solutions for artillery and other available firepower

Air Defence Operator - use sophisticated radar systems to identify and analyse potential threats, then employ surface-to-air missile systems to destroy them

Benefits of an ADF Gap Year in the Army:

  • Unique 12-month experience
  • Opportunities to travel Australia
  • Receive world-class Army training
  • Access to free fitness facilities
  • Make lifelong friends
  • Enjoy a good salary package
  • 16.4% superannuation - a huge 4.9% over the Australian standard
  • Gain valuable work and life experience
  • Free medical and dental

Salary:

Upon completion of your Initial Military and Employment Training, you’ll earn at least $79,615 plus 16.4% superannuation.
