About This Opportunity
We are looking for a talented Lawyer to join our Legal Services team and contribute to achieving UQ's goals through delivering strategic and commercial legal advice.

Reporting directly to the Director of Legal Services, you will provide legal advice on a wide range of matters, including commercial, contractual, and student related issues.

As a member of our collaborative and dedicated team, you will contribute to delivering timely, high quality and strategic legal advice, supporting the General Counsel and Director provide services to UQ that focus on customer service, professionalism and best practice.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including consultancy agreements, licenses, nondisclosure agreements, student placement agreements, gift agreements and more.
  • Provide legal advice on a wide range of issues affecting UQ, including student matters, policy development, bequests, privacy, administrative law and governance. Draft correspondence and negotiate with external lawyers involved in disputes.
  • Contribute to strengthening the knowledge and capacity of UQ staff regarding legal and regulatory frameworks. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients, team members, and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in overseeing and managing legal services provided by external law firms and counsel.
  • Contribute to the proactive identification and management of current and emerging legal risks and priorities for UQ.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining comprehensive legal resources and precedent materials. Support the marketing of Legal Services' capabilities and services to internal clients.
  • Other duties as required by the General Counsel.

About You
You will be a highly adaptable and flexible legal professional, capable of working effectively across various practice areas and handling tasks of varying complexity. Your exceptional time management and organisational skills, combined with a meticulous attention to detail, will allow you to prioritise tasks effectively and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.

As a qualified Solicitor or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland, you will bring a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant post-admission experience to this role.

  • Strong expertise in commercial and contract law, coupled with proficiency in drafting legal documents and resolving complex legal matters.
  • Solutions-oriented approach with excellent judgment and business acumen.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and adapting positively to change and uncertainty.
  • Collaborative team player who can also work independently.
  • Effective written and oral communicator, skilled at negotiating with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrate ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively under the supervision and direction of senior lawyers.
  • Exemplify personal drive and integrity, providing impartial and forthright advice while remaining positive and sustaining effort under pressure.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with the legislative framework applicable to UQ or experience working for a statutory body or government entity.
  • Experience in trusts, wills, and estates will be highly valued.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check.
